Wellness and preventive care are just as important for your pet as they are for you. This includes an annual physical exam, dental exam, eye exam and maybe even a nutritional consultation.. The advantage of bringing your pet to a veterinarian annually is that your pet will have all aspects of their health examined in one visit -- as opposed to visiting numerous doctors as humans must do. We recommend your pet receive a physical exam every year so that we can spot any hidden health issues, or at the very least, obtain a health history and baseline information we can compare to and review in the coming years. For example, this will help us spot any changes in blood work, weight changes, or note any growths that may have developed. During a physical examination, we will ask you questions about your pet’s lifestyle such as: whether they spend most of their time indoors or outdoors, which food(s) they eat, how their activity and energy level are, etc. Then we’ll do a thorough physical exam, including listening to your pet's heart and lungs, evaluating your pet's vision and looking in their ears, palpating their abdomen, checking the range of motion and assessing the health of their joints, looking for any unusual lumps, checking their reflexes, and evaluating the health of their teeth and gums. If your pet is over seven he or she is considered a senior pet and we recommend a full blood panel to be proactive in catching diseases such as cancer, kidney, heart and liver disease. The sooner these conditions are detected, the better the chance of effectively managing them. Routine examinations give us an opportunity to develop a picture of your pet's overall health and for you to ask general or specific questions about your pet. Examinations are also essential in spotting problems before they become serious health issues and are also a good time for your pet to get up-to-date on his or her vaccinations.

Pay for Quality
" My dog Aussie has had chronic ear infections since we moved to California from North Carolina 2 1/2 years ago. He's apparently allergic to something airborne. Our previous vet never seemed to take it seriously and gave the same medication over and over again that never did anything but give him a few minutes of relief. We noticed he was in really bad shape with his ears and was also licking his paws to the point where there was hair loss!
My mom has been going to BRVC with her ""zoo"" for years now. I looked online on Sunday and noticed they were open 7 days a week so I called and they were able to fit Aussie in that afternoon. Everyone there was very friendly and was very good with Aussie. Dr. Taylor was very informative and told us she could do a blood test to find out exactly what he was allergic to but that would cost an extra $250 on top of the medication I needed to take home. She took a quick sample of his ears and came back stating my baby had 3 different types of infections in his ear including one that was causing calcium to build up (which if untreated, could cause permanent damage). She prescribed 5 medications for my boy and answered any questions I had with a very calm and patient demenor.
I am very happy with Dr. Taylor and BRVC. The only negative is that they are pricey.
Within a day, Aussie seemed sooooo much better. He hasn't licked his paws once since we got back from the vet and now almost 4 days later, Aussie acts like he never had an ear infection. So even though it was expensive, my dog finally seems to be getting better. We go back in a few days for a re-check to make sure the infection is gone.
I strongly recommend BRVC... or at least Dr. Taylor. I just wish they were a tad cheaper on everything they charged for. But you pay for quality."

Very Caring
"Our dog Riley injured his hind leg chasing an animal in our yard last night. We have used BR for boarding twice but never for vet services. so glad we decided to today. The desk and technicians were so caring and friendly. The doctor was awesome. He really took his time examining with his hands and found the injury; it was a simple sprained ankle. The dr gave us the option of x-rays or waiting 5 days to see if it improves which if it does will save us the cost of the x-rays.Our dog is home resting and on his way to recovery. We have decided to change our vet to BR."
Going Green
Solar Powered Veterinary Care
In 2005 we installed 324 solar panels on our roof, capable of generating 45,000 watts per hour, making Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care the first commercial business in San Ramon to be a self-generator of electricity. The photo at left shows the dark solar panel arrays which shade about 2/3 of our roof, further reducing our need for cooling during the summer months.
The use of efficient, renewable energy at our hospital prevents the production of 236,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually, a gas that contributes to global warming. This is the equivalent of planting 14,100 trees! As a result of our efforts, we have been recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a leader in the use of renewable energy and were awarded membership in the EPA's Green Power Partnership at the Leadership Level.

Going Green
At Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care we are making every effort to be a more environmentally conscious hospital. Below are some of the other steps we’ve taken to help our environment:
- Installed a digital radiograph X-ray system. This eliminates the use of X-ray film containing large quantities of silver, and eliminates the use of chemicals for developing those X-rays.
- Converted our HVAC (heating/ventilation/air conditioning) to a high efficiency system which utilizes re-circulated water that condenses on our air conditioning equipment to further lower the temperature of the coolant within. This results in a 40% increase in efficiency.
- Implemented a recycling program.
- We "Planted" drought-resistant landscape..
Our History
In 1997, Dr. Jay Kerr, Dr. James DeLano, and Dr. Franklin Utchen began discussions to merge Crow Canyon Veterinary Clinic (founded 1981 by Dr. Kerr) and Norris Canyon Veterinary Medical Center (founded 1989 by Drs. Delano and Utchen). The goal was to develop a state-of-the-art medical center for pets and provide for the needs of the growing San Ramon Valley area.
